ChildNEXUS College Transition Summit for Students with Disabilities

Just like their peers, students with disabilities can and are going to college. Knowing this, families and professionals may have questions about  the application process, and what students can expect from the college environment once they get there.

ChildNEXUS has gathered experienced professionals in admissions, disability services, assistive technology, and educational therapy to ensure that everyone involved in students' college transition has the information they need to make planning effective.

This event will be happening live and participants will have a chance to submit questions ahead of time and ask them live at the end of each session. Handouts will be mailed to participants shortly before the conference.

Recordings will be available for two weeks after the conference, but only for viewers who sign up before the conference.

Preparing Students with Disabilities for Successful College Transition

Presenter: Elizabeth C. Hamblet

Description: The transition from high school is challenging for any high school student. For students with disabilities, it also presents a disability services system that is very different from the one they knew in high school, but with the proper preparation, students can enjoy success! Author, speaker and university learning disabilities consultant Elizabeth C. Hamblet explains how the system for accommodations works at college, what is commonly available, and shares other information to help make sure students are ready.

Assistive Technology Supports to Support Success in College and Beyond

Presenter: Kristen S. Neuber

Description: This session will discuss assistive technology software and devices available to support students with disabilities succeed in the post-secondary environment. The main focus will be on technology to support reading, writing, note-taking, planning and time management. The session will include and overview of selected technologies, brief demonstrations and strategies to effectively integrate technologies into everyday life as a college student.

Q&A with College Disability Services Directors

Panelists: Tomeiko Scott, Spencer Scruggs, and Marvin Williams

Description: After listening to the presentation in Session 1, participants have a chance to ask experienced disability directors may have more questions. This is your chance to hear directly from these professionals about how things work at their universities, find out what accommodations they do and don't commonly approve, and more. Submit your questions in advance or live during the panel.

Session 4 - 12:55-1:55 PDT

Q&A with College Admissions Directors

Panelists: Jake Burnett, Catherine Davenport, Sacha Thieme

Description: When students with disabilities are applying to college, they're likely to hear a lot of different advice about what they should and shouldn't do in their applications and how admissions offices handle information they submit. Submit your questions in advance or live during the panel and get answers from three experienced admissions directors.

2:05 - 3:05 PDT (5:05 -6:05 EDT)- Session 5

Q&A on Executive Functioning with Educational Therapists

Panelists: Jill Bodie and Dr. Daniel Franklin

Description: All students transitioning to college find they have to be more organized and manage their time well. For students with disabilites that affect their executive functioning, this can be an even bigger challenge. Experienced educational therapists will discuss what strategies they teach their college-bound students to help them be successful, and they'll also take your questions.
