Three stories of survival from Canada's harsh childcare system.
About this Event

Our event - Childhood, interrupted - is a collaboration among the students from stitched! at The Creative School, and the story sharers, around whose lived expertise the show is developed. You will hear the stories of three adults whose childhood experiences in foster care and as crown wards give us insight into how the system works.

What can we do about it?

What is Live Journalism?

Live journalism is a format in which non-fiction stories are performed before a live audience. The presence of a journalist before the audience allows for a recognition of subjectivity and locates the journalist(s) in the piece. Live journalism outlets across the globe engage in various performance approaches, often including multimedia, music, artistic collaborations and audience interaction to deepen the potential of the format and often challenge traditional journalistic norms. We recognize that live journalism is derivative of many ancient and more contemporary practices such as oral storytelling, documentary and verbatim theatre.

What is stitched! Live Journalism studio?

The stitched! Live Journalism Lab is a creative and research lab at Toronto Metropolitan University that brings teaching, research and practice into conversation with one another. Specifically, it utilizes a solidarity and trauma-informed approach to a community-based reporting practice centring non-dominant voices and focusing on community-building. Shows incorporate a wide range of multimedia elements and audience engagement approaches to make the experience as immersive and unique as possible. Stitched! productions aim to create and foster community conversation and action, creating a more holistic value for journalistic practice.

Trigger Warning: This live performance contains sensitive subject matter and details the abuse, trauma, and violence inflicted upon young children. This content is not suitable for children. If you require any accommodations to make this show a safe space, please reach out in advance or contact us through our email: [email protected]
