About this Event
Chickenology: (n.) the collaborative study of life science standards by focusing on the ancestry, traits, and behaviors of a familiar organism–the chicken
Teach life science in grades 6–12 by taking a closer look at chickens.
Tooled specifically for Ohio Biology standards, Chickenology prepares your students well for state testing and earning that science seal!
GrowNextGen teacher leaders will guide you in how to teach ancestry, inheritance, and environmental/human impact using chickens and turkeys for context.
In this 2-day workshop for Ohio science teachers, you’ll…
Explore Chickenology, a 10-lesson curriculum resource with focus questions such as:
- Where did chickens come from?
- How can environmental conditions impact growth rate, behavior and reproduction?
- How do inherited traits impact survival?
- How can we predict the expression and variance of traits in poultry?
NEW! *10 more lessons* for high school biology concepts, including: Simpson’s Diversity Index, Hardy Weinburg, cladograms, biotechnology practices, and more.
Engage deeper science learning with:
- Career videos
- Virtual field trips
- Movement songs
- E-learning modules
- Games and simulations
- Project-based engineering challenges
Try out the games, simulations, and engineering challenges yourself during the workshop.
Equip yourself to share high-tech, high-talent, high-demand science career pathways in the agriculture industry, currently employing 1 in 7 Ohioans.
- Share dinner with industry experts as our guest
- Learn what your students need to get into scientific careers in agriculture.
- Virtually tour a local commercial operation applying classroom science concepts.
→ Coming from out of town? We provide meals and hotel rooms for participants.
Enjoy bringing back the classroom supplies you need, totalling $350 in value:
- prepared slides
- hygrometer/thermometer
- foldscopes aka student microscopes
- plus materials for the games and engineering challenges
You’ll also earn 1.8 CEUs.
This content focuses on MS life science standards and HS Biology standards.
“I learned so many things to bring back to the classroom! Also, thanks to the awesome sponsors, it was completely FREE!! They have both a middle school and high school curriculum! After the workshop, they give you a big bag of supplies to do the lessons in your classroom.” -Amber Hawk, Warren County Career Center“Chickenology is going to replace some stuff I've done in the past. It's the same topics, it's just better. Genetics and evolution is probably 1/3 of my curriculum. As a biologist and teacher, Chickenology is giving me so many good ideas. We can riff off these lessons and add on to them.” -Erica Hitzhusen, Worthingway Middle School
“The idea that we can try to make the learning real to the students, and draw them into the ag industry, motivated me to come. 1 in 7 jobs is related to the ag industry, so this will certainly benefit them in the future. There are so many jobs out there in our state.” -Brian Ackert, Danville High School
Chickenology is presented by GrownNextGen and funded by the Ohio Poultry Association and the Ohio Soybean Council in partnership with Educationprojects.org and OSU/4H.
* This workshop does not include or provide supplies for hatching chicks. It is NOT for elementary teachers.
–
GrowNextGen connects students to real-world science and careers in modern agriculture through the generous support of the Ohio Soybean Council and Ohio soybean farmers.
