Chicha music itself is a rebellious genre at heart, born from rural-urban migration, social struggle, and working-class creativity. So it’s no surprise that Los Shapis found resonance with the anti-establishment energy of punk. Their image became iconic in Peru, not only for their music, but for asserting that indigenous and mestizo identity could be modern, electric, and stylish on their own terms.

The Shapis from Peru, a legendary chicha (Peruvian cumbia) band, were deeply fascinated by the punk aesthetics of the time. Their admiration for bands like The Ramones was so strong that it inspired them to recreate the iconic pose from the Ramones’ debut album for the cover of their own record. Dressed in tight jeans, sunglasses, and leather jackets, Los Shapis paid homage to punk while proudly representing the vibrant, tropical sounds of the Andean barrios of Lima.
This visual crossover is one of the most striking examples of cultural hybridization in Latin American pop culture: Andean rhythms mixed with psychedelic keyboards and electric guitars, combined with a rebellious visual identity borrowed from punk and rock’n’roll. Far from imitation, it was a bold act of appropriation — reinterpreting global countercultures through the lens of Peruvian street music.
