About this Event
The Sisterhood was a Black women's writers group created in the 80s by Alice Walker, June Jordan, Toni Morrison and many other black women writers to bring Black women creatives together to write, advocate, and support one another during social and political upheaval.
With the times being just as fearful, draining, and painful, I know that being in community and sharing and developing our craft as Black creatives is just as important now as it was then. The goal of The Sisterhood: Next Generation is to not only have a moment to discuss work and projects but also to dedicate time to organizing our voices and lending a shoulder, a hand, and ears to one another.
Each monthly meeting will focus on a theme. Sessions will include a 15-minute writing exercise and prompt at the beginning of each session to get conversations and creative energy flowing, then members will have 45 minutes to freely work on any project they have in synchrony.
Chicago In-Person Meetings: The in-person meetings take place on a Friday of each month at various Black, Women, and/or Queer owned shops to support local businesses in the city.
The Sisterhood meets in-person and virtually each month. Members can attend one or both sessions of their choosing each month.
