About this Event

Site Captain: Mike Andrews

The Chicago-Calumet River system is healthier now than it’s been in 150 years, but litter continues to be detrimental, hurting people and wildlife and diminishing the beauty of our region. You can make a difference by volunteering with Friends of the Chicago River on Chicago River Day - our fun, free, family-friendly annual cleanup the morning of Saturday, May 13, 2023 from 9 a.m. – 12 noon.

Every year, thousands of volunteers come together to build community around our local waterways and learn about the harm litter causes their neighborhood, wildlife and water quality. There are more than 70 sites throughout the watershed from as far north as Lincolnshire, Lake Forest and North Chicago in Lake County and south and southwest including Dolton, Riverdale, Palos and Summit. We’ve succeeded in reducing litter in some locations, so volunteers will also help with additional stewardship activities like removing invasive species and trail maintenance. Chicago River Day also kicks off Friends’ Litter Free Chicago-Calumet River program, our year-long litter removal effort which includes cleanup events, on land and on the water from canoes.

Volunteers who register before Friday, May 5, 2023 receive a Chicago River Day T-shirt as a special thank you gift. Registration for Chicago River Day is open until a site is at capacity. Children eight and up are eligible to volunteer. Younger family members are welcome to observe provided they are supervised by an adult. Individual registration required, volunteers under 18 need their guardian to register.

Friends follows CDC, state and local coronavirus guidelines, which are updated to reflect best practices on a regular basis. To promote the safety, health and comfort of volunteers and staff, we ask participants to be fully vaccinated, unless they have a medical exemption, and consider wearing masks when social distancing is not possible. Visit Friends’ website to see the complete Volunteer Events COVID-19 Protocols.
