Celebrate 325 years of piano history at Studio Bell with Alberta Vocal Arts in this illuminating presentation of traditional lieder — classical art songs — where the expressive power of voice and piano meet in perfect harmony.Chiaroscuro, an exploration of the balance of light and shadow, is a term used interchangeably in both the visual art world and in music, particularly Italian Bel Canto. Traverse the juxtaposition of light/dark, day/night, heaven/hell, and love/despair.
No stranger to both contemporary and traditional music scenes, Kathleen Morrison and Carlos Foggin are both recognized for their innovative programming, a unique conversational style which builds a deep rapport with audiences, and a strong desire to delve ever deeper into their artistic subject matter.
This presentation will feature songs from R. Strauss, Schubert, Schumann, Beethoven, and more.

Founded in 2023 by soprano Kathleen Morrison with the vision of bringing 'opera to the people' in her hometown of Calgary, Alberta Vocal Arts Association is dedicated to promoting and celebrating classical vocal arts in Alberta.
Our mission is to inspire and engage audiences through captivating performances, collaborative initiatives, and active community engagement, showcasing the talent and artistry of vocal performers. We emphasize demystifying opera and making it accessible to all, often collaborating with other genres and groups to create a rich and diverse cultural tapestry.
As advocates for classical vocal arts in Calgary, we provide opportunities for mid-level artists and enrich our community's cultural vitality. Following our inaugural season, which featured a concert performance, a liederabend, and a fully staged production of Strauss' Die Fledermaus, we remain committed to deepening appreciation for the classical vocal arts.
About Piano 325:
Piano 325 is a new National Music Centre exhibition celebrating the 325th anniversary of the piano. Over three centuries, the piano — shaped by the innovations of countless builders and manufacturers — has remained one of the most important and versatile instruments in music, influencing nearly every genre and artists from Beethoven to Elton John.
Piano 325 spotlights the stories of the builders and manufacturers who played key roles in the instrument’s evolution and lasting impact on music. The exhibition will feature renowned names like Broadwood & Sons, Erard, Heintzman & Co., and Steinway & Sons, alongside lesser-known pioneers like Johannes Zumpe. A rotating selection of rare and historic instruments from NMC’s collection will also be showcased, including an 1899 Broadwood grand piano.
