Come join us at the Gwinnett County Public Library – Norcross Branch, for a fun and interactive chess workshop led by the inspiring Dr. Alexey Root! Whether you're a beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, this event is perfect for chess lovers of all ages. Meet Dr. Alexey Root, national master with a peak US Chess rating of 2260, and the 1989 U.S. Women's Chess Champion, as she discusses her latest book. Alexey Root has a Ph.D. in education from UCLA and is a lecturer at The University of Texas at Dallas, teaching education courses that explore the uses of chess.

Dr. Alexey Root is not only a national chess master, but also a highly respected educator and award-winning author. She has written and published numerous books on chess, education, and history, widely used by teachers, students, and chess enthusiasts. Explore 👉 her books here:
Attendees will also have a unique opportunity to play in a 10-board simultaneous exhibition against Dr. Root (first come, first to play).
There will be chess sets and boards available for casual play among attendees. Books will also be available for purchase and signing.

A cornerstone of our work is the SE Women and Girls Chess Championships Task Force, a coalition that secured a grant from to establish an annual regional championship for women and girls. The 2026 tournament is coming soon on Mother’s Day weekend (Saturday, May 9th) in Atlanta. There are multiple sessions available, suitable for chess players of all levels. We also have family and friends-friendly sessions for boys. Please scan the four QR codes to register. 1. Purple. $65 entry fee. Women’s open session. ~thousands cash awards for winners. For rated female players. 2. Blue. $40 entry fee. Girls K-12 scholastic. Team Competition (4 girls and more per team, team's score total of top four players.). Trophies/plaques to the top 5 teams.3. Yellow. $25 entry fee. Unrated Women4. Green. $35 entry fee. Rated Family & Friends (boys and men)
