In 1956, Florence, an orphaned Hungarian refugee, was sent to the United States and raised as an American. Thirty-years later, Florence finds herself as the “second” to the cocky American chess Grand Master, Freddie, in his quest to defeat his Russian rival, Anatoly. Featuring bold power-ballads and catchy 1980s bangers including radio hit “One Night in Bangkok,” Chess captures the emotional tension and absurdity of the era. “The show is a wild ride,” comments director Elizabeth Helman, “the story really explores how the political and personal collide in a moving way.”
