Vaughn grew up in Lawrence, Kansas, and his own culinary heritage is rooted in his grandmother’s Southern and Midwestern cooking. Fox and Pearl embraces those culinary beginnings and family traditions, communicating those values through the art of pickling, curing, smoking, and wood-fired hearth cooking.

Vaughn attended The International Culinary Center (founded as the French Culinary Institute). After returning to his hometown, he worked with Chef Ken Baker at Pachamama’s. In 2014, he opened Hank Charcuterie in a former gas station. What started out as a butcher shop quickly evolved into a full-service restaurant.

As the bulk of their customers began driving in from Kansas City, Vaughn and partner Kristine Hull decided to move their family to the Westside neighborhood and open Fox and Pearl.

Their 4,000-square-foot restaurant is located at the intersection of Summit Street and Cesar Chavez Boulevard, and includes an open-hearth kitchen that allows Vaughn to cook with more range, offering a wide array of smoked and grilled meats, coal-roasted vegetables, and house-made pastas.

Fox and Pearl’s locally sourced menu is rooted in the many relationships Vaughn has cultivated with family-owned farms and the finest local artisan producers. Vaughn has been working with Scotty and Juniper Hill Farms for years, and we are excited to offer this collaborative dinner on the farm to showcase some of the spectacular produce that Juniper Hill cultivates every fall.

Less than six months after opening, Fox and Pearl was named KC’s 2019 Restaurant of the Year. Fox and Pearl also received nationwide acclaim when Vaughn was named by the James Beard Foundation as a 2020 semifinalist for Best Chef Midwest and was named by Esquire in Nov. 2020 as one of the 23 Best New Restaurants in America.
