Make a Tea Bowl and Learn to Whisk Matcha
About this Event

Please join Ayumi Nojiri to discover how to make your own Japanese tea bowl (chawan) and enjoy matcha time.

Ayumi is a Japanese ceramic artist based in New York City. Her work is celebrated for its delicate balance of form and function, embodying the principles of wabi-sabi and the timeless beauty of imperfection. Through her Chawan workshop, Ayumi aims to share the rich cultural heritage of Japanese ceramics, creating pieces that are deeply meaningful.

EunYoung, co-creator of Kinka, will introduce chanoyu and discuss the chawan, highlighting its role as a centerpiece in the Japanese tea ceremony. Participants will learn to whisk matcha before creating their own chawan. Her long journey practicing the Japanese tea ceremony has inspired her creativity through various Japanese-inspired arts.
No experience is required for this workshop. Participants will hand-build Chawan. All materials and tools will be provided, and the firing fee is included. Participants can pick up their fired piece 3-4 weeks after the workshop.
*There are no refunds within 7 days of the event due to the limited number of spots in the workshop and the preparation involved

*Chawan, the tea bowls used in chanoyu, have been crafted since the 16th century. Although a chawan may appear to be a simple bowl for drinking tea, it is often referred to as a "hand-held universe," with great attention paid to the harmonious interplay of curve, volume, rim, and foot, as well as how well it feels in the hands.

*Chado, The Way of Tea, is the classical Japanese art of making tea in the presence of guests. This aesthetic ritual embodies the principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.
