Produced by the award-winning production company Black Robin Media, CHAUTAUQUA AT 150: WYNTON MARSALIS’ ALL RISE will tell the institution’s story through the voices of its current patrons and partners, including those who have spoken and performed from Chautauqua’s iconic stages over the past several years.

Chautauqua Institution, founded in the late 19th century as a place for Americans to make purposeful use of leisure time, has dedicated itself to using arts and education to elevate the discussions that have transformed our nation throughout its history. Through musical performances, original filming, archival footage, photos, and interviews, CHAUTAUQUA AT 150: WYNTON MARSALIS’ ALL RISE will artistically explore the impact that the Chautauqua Institution has had in providing a critical platform for some of the most thought-provoking, challenging, and often uplifting conversations in America and beyond.

The documentary is centered around a new production of “All Rise,” written by award-winning trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Originally premiered in 1999, this jazz symphony will be performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) with Wynton Marsalis as well as a symphonic orchestra and choir.

Moderator: Deborah Sunya Moore, Senior Vice President and Chief Program Officer for Chautauqua Institution
Brief Bio: Deborah is a percussionist and arts educator with a long history as an advocate of performing arts programs for youth and persons with disabilities. In addition to leading Chautauqua’s arts, education, religion and recreation programming strategy, Deborah has served as a national workshop leader for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a Fulbright specialist and State Department speaker.
Panelist; Michael E. Hill, Ed.D., President, Chautauqua Institution
Brief Bio: Dr. Hill began his service as Chautauqua Institution’s 18th president on Jan. 1, 2017. He immediately set about ushering in an expanded vision for the Institution, emphasizing engaged dialogue on the issues that shape our world and an evolution to year-round programming. He is concluding a $150 million capital campaign for Chautauqua that is infusing unprecedented levels of giving to the Institution’s endowment and providing critical support for Chautauqua’s Summer Assembly program, facilities, technology, environmental sustainability, and inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility.
Panelist: Lynne Robinson, CEO and Executive Producer, Black Robin Media
Brief Bio: Lynne Robinson is an award-winning producer, director, and founder of Black Robin Media, a television, documentary, museum, and digital media production company. In addition to PBS’s Chautauqua at 150: Wynton Marsalis’ All Rise, Black Robin Media’s recent productions include the 2024 Audible Original series On the Line with Daymond John; Maryland Public Television’s 2024 documentary Ben’s Ten: Chattel Slavery on Maryland’s Eastern Shore; the 2021 Smithsonian Channel documentaryReclaiming History: Our Native Daughters currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Robinson’s recent works also include directing the 2023 BET documentary BLACK+ICONIC: Style Gods hosted by award-winning actor, singer, and producer Billy Porter; and executive producing the 2022 Maryland Public Television (MPT) and Firelight Films documentaries Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom and Becoming Frederick Douglass, which both aired on PBS.

Panelist: Kwame Alexander, Michael I. Rudell Artistic Director of Literary Arts and Writer in Residence, Chautauqua Institution
Brief Bio: Kwame Alexander is a poet, educator, publisher, Emmy® Award-winning producer, and #1 New York Times bestselling author of 40 books, including his latest book “How Sweet The Sound”. At Chautauqua, he provides leadership for all literary arts programs, including the Kwame Alexander Writers’ Lab, The Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, and resident and online writing workshops, among other programs.
