About this Event
When Isabella Stewart Gardner arrived in Boston in the late 19th century, friends such as MGH physician Henry J. Bigelow, his family and others heartily invited her into their social circle. Other Bostonians, however, were aghast at her somewhat unconventional ways. When Gardner opened the doors to her museum-home to the city in 1903, they were positively agog.
Join us as author Natalie Dykstra examines Gardner's life through an exploration of the paintings, rare books, tapestries and other treasures and holdings she curated and chose to display in her Venetian palace on Boston's Fens, and how these objects continue to inform her biography. A book signing will follow the event.
