CHARULATA
(1964, Inde, 117 min., 16mm, VOSTA) Satyajit Ray

CHARULATA
(1964, India, 117 min., 16mm, English subtitles) Satyajit Ray
It is the end of the 19th century in Calcutta where lives an educated, cultivated and intelligent woman named Charulata. Relations with her husband have become distant and without passion. When her husband’s cousin is invited to live with them, she finds in him a like-minded confidant. But their love is complicated by the social expectations of the opulent class.
The twelfth film by Ray, CHARULATA is his favourite. (“Well, the one film that I would make the same way, if I had to do it again, is CHARULATA.”) It is without a doubt his most lyrically sophisticated and elegant work. An exciting story of love and solitude sublimely portrayed by lead actress Madhabi Mukherjee who has made two other films with Ray; The Big City (1963) and The Coward (1965).
The story is taken from the novel The Broken Nest (published 1901) by Nobel Prize laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941), a major inspiration for Ray who also adapted Tagore’s Three Daughters (1961) and created a documentary on him in 1961.
The treatment of painfully restrained feelings suggests more modern films such as In the Mood for Love, or The Remains of the Day and other class films by Merchant-Ivory. Charulata is also a socio-historical fresco depicting a crucial period in India’s history; the Bengali Renaissance, an explosive period of artistic creativity. Charulata’s husband, the intellectual editor of a political journal, embodies the aspirations of the early 20th century, particularly the resistance to British colonialism. Charulata herself aspires to an emancipation rendered difficult by her being a woman and finds an outlet in poetry and music.
Besides the screenplay, the casting, the music and certainly, the directing, Ray, here for the first time, gets behind the camera as cinematographer. His idea was to work more closely with his actors. With subtlety and sensitivity he has without doubt created one of the most beautiful portraits of a woman ever in the history of World cinema. Come see this for yourself as we present a gorgeous restored version film print in Bengali with English Subtitles. Because nobody does movie-going quite like CFS, as a very special treat, you can expect to see Indian classical dance performed live on stage!
Guest Artist: Trisha Ghosh has been performing traditional Indian classical dance for many years now. She last graced the deSève Cinema stage in November of 2023 when we presented Satyajit Ray’s THE MUSIC ROOM. Expect to be enchanted by two new live dance numbers from her right before CHARULATA projects on screen, and at intermission.
