Join us on Sunday September 28th at 3 pm as we celebrate the planting of a very special crabapple tree. We’ll gather in the Linden Place parlor and enjoy a fascinating tale of a woman whose life connects Bristol, RI to Charleston, SC, Hendersonville, NC and Waukegan, IL. We’ll adjourn to the gardens for apple cider mimosas and petite apple tarts and then cut the ribbon around a very special new planting in the garden.
Our afternoon begins with storyteller Lynn Smith sharing the romantic tale of Charlotte DeWolf. In 1902 while on an automobile trip in the Waukegan, Illinois countryside, she spotted a crabapple tree in full bloom and was mesmerized. She never had seen that particular style of blossom before. Charlotte was so taken with them that she sent a sample cutting to the Arnold Arboretum in Boston (Jamaica Plain), Massachusetts, managed by Harvard University. Come to the storytelling hour and find out the rest of the story.
Lynn Smith is a docent at Linden Place. Not only does she conduct tours of the mansion, she has also conducted multiple walking tours, written many articles, and given many lectures on The DeWolf Family, Samuel Pomeroy Colt, the Colt Farm and Colt State Park, and the free black community called New Goree that grew up along Wood Street in the mid to late 1800s.
