In the rare air between Americana-rock and Indie-roll soars Pilot Boy, the new album from the Charlie Millard Band. Fasten your seatbelts because the gentle lift-off of Jubilee, the song-one anthem to awestruck love, catapults into WUTRUW8ING4, the drum-pulsing G-force of song two. This is classic Charlie Millard Band—as soon as you think you’ve landed them squarely in any genre, their next song sends you spinning back into a cosmos of musicality and originality that defies compartmentalization—and gravity, for that matter. Now their virtuosity is available for the first time on vinyl.
The Charlie Millard Band approached this album with the dimensionality and intentionality of all their artistic endeavors at Hattie Jane Music, the umbrella enterprise that covers the White Piano Sessions, Sparrow King Films, and the Hattie Jane Song Catalog—all artistic ventures and tributaries of millard & Millard. On Pilot Boy, their first studio-recorded album, “One track bleeds into the other as silhouettes and spotlit characters fill up the sides,” Charlie mused. “We're hoping the listener will reach the end of Side B and want to turn it over and listen again.”
Vinyl was the perfect medium for that, but not because it’s trending. Charlie’s a long-time fan of the old-school format “for all the right reasons: the artwork, liner notes and lyrics… collecting an artist’s full repertoire.” Respect for tradition is a big part of it, but so, too, is “an ongoing 20-year cribbage battle,” Charlie laughed. “The current score is 753 to 752—millard is in the lead. We love to put a record on for our background music. Our cribbage games last about one album's worth.”
“We” is millard&Millard, the songwriting musicians who are also father and son: jercat millard (guitar, backing vocals, harmonica) and Charlie (piano, guitars, vocals, accordion, keys). Along with percussionist Will Harris, they comprise the Charlie Millard Band. CMB landed Pilot Boy’s score and collective soundscape smoothly with help and guidance from seasoned co-producers Jake Miller (Kansas Bible Company, Jake Miller and the Midwest Heat) and Graham Parsons (Go Rounds). Featuring Samantha Cooper (violin, harmonies), Jordan Hamilton (cello), Claire Millard (harmonies), Jake Miller (bass, harmonies), Rafael Chávez Moreno (bass), and Graham Parsons (lap steel, harmonies, percussion), it was mastered by Glenn Brown in Lansing, MI by producers millard, Millard, Miller, and Parsons.
