Charleston is entering a decade of decisions that will shape the peninsula for generations. The City of Charleston is preparing a new Peninsula Plan, a comprehensive zoning update, and a coordinated housing effort on the upper peninsula that could bring thousands of new units online. Each of these efforts shapes the others, and together they will influence the historic character, livability, and long-term resilience of the city we call home.
At the 2026 Advocacy Forum, Historic Charleston Foundation brings residents, preservationists, planners, and civic leaders together for a focused 90-minute conversation about what lies ahead — and how Charleston can plan for growth without losing what makes it Charleston. In the months ahead, Charlestonians will be asked to weigh in on the Peninsula Plan, a citywide zoning update, and large-scale housing and mixed-use proposals on the upper peninsula. These conversations move fastest when residents arrive informed — with a shared vocabulary, a clear grasp of trade-offs, and a working understanding of how transportation, design, and resilience depend on one another.
This forum is HCF's investment in that preparation. It is not a policy vote, nor a public hearing. It is an evening built to deepen local understanding and surface the questions our community should be asking as the Peninsula Plan unfolds.
The Forum will be held at The Charleston Museum's Arthur Wilcox Auditorium at 360 Meeting Street and will begin promptly at 6 pm. The evening will feature a special introduction and overview from City of Charleston Mayor William Cogswell followed by short presentations from each speaker, a facilitated panel discussion, and audience Q&A. Expect maps, visuals, and concrete Charleston examples — not abstractions. This program is free of charge and open to the public, however space is limited and registration is required.
