About this Event

Silent Screen Scotland returns to St. Vincent's Chapel, Edinburgh with a candlelit silent movie triple bill featuring three Charlie Chaplin comedy romances accompanied by live musicians.

Arguably one of cinema's most recognisable icons, Charlie Chaplin's career spanned more than 75 years and he is considered one of the industry's most important figures. Rising to fame in the era of silent film, Chaplin was not only at home in front of the camera but regularly wrote, directed, produced and composed the music for the films in which he starred.

Silent Screen Scotland will screen three of Chaplin's comedy romance pictures, each accompanied by a professional ensemble of piano and two violins performing specially curated scores (including much of Chaplin's own compositions).

The first picture of the night will be 1916's "The Vagabond", Chaplin's third film with Mutual Films Corporation - the American picture company that produced many of his greatest comedies. Charlie rescues a kidnapped woman and the two seem to be falling in love until a rival and her parents arrive on the scene. It's not long before she starts to leave with the rival until she realises that her heart belongs to Charlie after all.

The second screening will be "A Woman" - released in 1915 by Essanay Film Manufacturing Company with whom Chaplin created a series of successful comedies from 1915-1916. Not so lucky in love as in "The Vagabond", Charlie is invited to dinner by two women but he must dress up as a woman himself when their husbands arrive home!

Following the intermission is the arrival of one of Chaplin's most recognisable characters - "The Tramp" in the 1915 Essanay Studio's picture of the same name. Charlie saves a farmer’s daughter from some thieving thugs and subsequently stops their attempt to rob the farm. He falls in love with the girl, but upon the arrival of her sweetheart he soon realises that the course of true love never did run smooth...

Tickets are priced at £10 each and can be purchased through Eventbrite (booking fee applies) or by emailing [email protected].

"Chaplin In Love: Silent Movie Triple Bill" will be presented in complete compliance with all Scottish Government Covid-19 rules and regulations - providing audience members with peace of mind that they are in a safe environment. Please note that tickets are non-refundable except in the event that the screening is cancelled as a result of newly introduced Covid-19 government restrictions prohibiting cultural events from taking place (booking fees are non-refundable).
