About Changeling Theatre
Changeling Theatre is best known for their hugely successful Summer open air tours and have staged Shakespeare’s most popular plays in locations ranging from castles to beaches to football stadiums. Their 2022 tour features two plays: Shakespeare’s Othello and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.
Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest
The truth is rarely pure and never simple.
To be successful in love is to be called Ernest. Or so it is in Oscar Wilde’s satirical masterpiece following the story of two eligible bachelors, Jack and Algy.
In love with two women who conveniently claim to only love men named Ernest, Jack and Algy create alter egos called Ernest to win their hearts.
But it’s a struggle to keep up with their own stories and they quickly become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure. The frankly bonkers plot of this play mocks Victorian sensibilities with some of the best loved and ludicrous characters to be found on the modern stage.
And if that’s not sold it to you, there’s always that line about the handbag.
William Shakespeare’s Othello
O, beware, my lord, of jealousy: it is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.
Othello has it all. A recently married man of rank, he has enjoyed a glittering military career and has a successful future ahead of him.
But Othello has enemies. Enemies that will do anything to bring him down. One of them, Iago, devises a sinister plot to undermine Othello’s reputation, tricking him into a jealous rage that ends in tragedy.
Love, jealousy, deception, murder. Othello is an edge-of-the-seat thriller. Changeling’s production promises to fizz with passion, intrigue and dark humour.

A handy guide to open air theatre
When should I arrive?
― Plan to arrive for when the doors open so you can enjoy the surroundings and choose your spot in front of the stage.
What do I need to bring?
― There is no seating, so bring a picnic blanket and/or fold up chairs. Don’t forget to bring your picnic baskets full of delicious food, wine/champagne to enjoy. Note: hot and cold non-alcoholic cold drinks and light refreshments will be on sale. It’s also worth remembering that it is likely to become cooler once the sun has gone down so bring warm clothes and a blanket.
What happens if it rains?
― We very much believe the ‘show must go on’ so the performance will continue regardless of the weather, plan for all eventualities and remember to bring a waterproof layer and an extra jumper!
Where is Allington Castle and is there onsite parking?
― Allington Castle, Maidstone ME16 0N. There is event parking within the grounds of the castle.
Can children come along?
― The Importance of Being Earnest, is a suitable performance for children to come along and enjoy. Regards Othello, we don't want to reveal any spoilers, so we strongly suggest parental guidance as the play, with elements of tragedy, may contain scenes unsuitable for young children.
