About this Event

Gaelin Elmore shares his firsthand knowledge of trauma and foster care. He shares hope with those working with children. A former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman reflects on his experiences within the foster care system for more than a decade during which he experienced physical, mental and emotional abuse. His high school football coach saved him. Gaelin was a star high school football player and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in communications.

Objectives: Current approaches to supporting children in foster care often focus only on physical environments and needs, overlooking the essential relational need of belonging for children in foster care. Many youth in foster care internalize the belief that they do not deserve to belong in the space they occupy. These misconceptions shape a world where they must fight to survive rather than thrive. This portion of the workshop is designed to help you:

1) Discuss the latest scientific research that continues to affirm belonging as the missing link that every child needs.

2) Explore the 4 Directions of Belonging as a comprehensive framework designed to explore the levels at which belonging flows for helping professionals.

Kallee Walker and Nicole Greene are professional team members at Arrow Child & Family Ministries, a prominent non-profit child welfare organization dedicated to foster care and adoption services. Both women were recently recognized together by the agency during Child Abuse Prevention Month for earning their Certified Praesidium Guardian designation, which is considered Arrow's gold standard in abuse prevention.

Objectives: This portion of the workshop is designed to help you:

1) Compare the Texas Child-Centered Care (T3C) guidelines which replaced the service level system.

2) Apply treatment planning that incorporates how the timing and severity of trauma and the quality and quantity of supportive relationships impacts the brain.

3) Analyze the role of the community (“therapeutic web”) along with available family members who can create an atmosphere of understanding and of belonging and make a positive impact on healing.

Audience: This training is appropriate for social workers, youth workers, child advocates, CPS, attorneys, judges, teachers, law enforcement, the public, parents, or other organizations.

Registration & Cost:
$25 for non-members and no additional fee for CATF Members.

RSVPS REQUIRED BY JULY 31ST. Walkups will NOT be allowed due to sell-out expected.
