n 2026 we will be delivering several ambitious long-distance Challenge Trails. To complete some of these challenges, you should be of reasonable fitness and able to walk at a pace of approx. 3 mph (5kmph) on the flat, for up to 12 hours, but if you don't think you are quite there yet, this is where our Challenge Trail Training comes in. Challenge Trail Training (CTT) will be a series of training walks over 6 weeks, every Saturday, from Jan 3rd, in East Lancashire / West Yorkshire.
By building our speed and endurance over 6 weeks, we will grow both the distance covered and elevation climbed.
Whitworth Round will be the second of six CTT walks in our first block for 2026. This is a 12.1 - mile / 16.8km (1578ft / 481m climb) route, which takes us up over moorland, onto Brown Wardle, Middle Hill and Hades Hill, before dropping us down to Shawforth and returning on a lower route back into Whitworth and through pretty Healey Dell.
Please note that there are several stiles, includingl adder stiles on this route and parts of this walk will be very boggy if it has been wet beforehand.
Who is CTT for?
CTT is for those who are walking regularly already (at about the 2-mph mark) over 10 miles, but still feel they have a long way to go to increase their speed and distance. If you think that may be you, keep reading...
It's for you if you want to walk regularly, gaining speed over a few weeks.
It’s for you if, perhaps you would struggle to motivate yourself alone.
It’s for you if you want to walk in a group with an empathetic, qualified leader, who will add challenge appropriately and provide a supportive atmosphere.

As with all Abigail’s Trails events these will be led by professional, qualified Mountain Leaders with Outdoor First Aid and Mental Health First Aid certificates, Public Liability Insurance and a wealth of expertise to keep you safe and happy.
These have been incredibly popular over the last few years and helped many people achieve their goals. You do NOT have to be booked on any of our Challenge Trails to join us.
Advanced booking is essential as spaces are limited. If you need some further information, before booking, please email [email protected] or call me on 07733225251.
Well behaved, friendly (with people and other dogs) dogs are welcome, but must be agile and able to get over stiles! If you use a retractable lead, please ensure it is kept short on these walks to reduce risk of entangling other people.
