Discover the Essence of Japanese Culture Through Tea


Step into the serene world of Cha-no-yu, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Rooted in centuries of mindfulness, etiquette, discipline, and aesthetic beauty, this beginner course introduces you to the foundational practices of the Omotesenke school, one of the three main schools of Japanese tea ceremony.


Conducted at Hayakawa Japanese Language School & Cultural Center, this in-person event offers an authentic cultural learning experience under the guidance of a certified Japanese tea master.

What You Will Learn

In this course, participants will learn Warigeiko, the basic movements of tea ceremony, and Ryakutemae, the abbreviated tea preparation procedure. The training will cover both Usucha, light tea, and Koicha, thick tea.


This Nyūmon is the first step in a structured 7-level journey in the Omotesenke tradition.


Learning Levels in Omotesenke Cha-no-yu

1. Nyūmon – Introduction to basic techniques and knowledge

2. Narai-goto – Deepening foundational practice

3. Kazari-mono – Focus on display and form

4. Satsu-bako – Practice with tea box utensils

5. Kara-mono – Certification to teach

6. Dai-tenmoku – Mastery of Tenmoku bowls

7. Bon-ten – Professor-level qualification with eligibility to receive a formal tea name
