As part of the film marathon “Culture against War” on the 9th of March, we are screening the documentary film “Palyanytsia” by directors Kadim Tarasov and Yulia Bolshynska at Central European University in Budapest. The screening will be in English, with Hungarian subtitles.
“Palyanytsia” is not just a film, but a study of a phenomenon. It immerses us into the consciousness of two American street artists Bandit and Johnny, who look at the world through the prism of their art. Their paintings in their own homeland were an expression of freedom, a protest against the system. They believed that they understood the world, until the war in Ukraine broke this illusion.
Their journey begins not as an act of heroism, but as an attempt to understand what is happening. Kyiv, Irpin, Bucha, Borodyanka, Kharkiv, Kramatorsk, Kostyantynivka, Odesa, Mykolaiv are not just cities, they are experiences that require awareness. Ukrainians, despite pain and loss, remain strong. Their resilience becomes a phenomenon that cannot be ignored.
Against this reality, the heroes' art takes on a new meaning. It no longer tries to provide answers. Instead, it becomes a tool to ask questions. Questions that go beyond the ordinary: "What does it mean to be human in a state of destruction?" or "How can you change yourself to find yourself whole?"
The film is followed by a discussion in English with the producer and the heroine of the movie Kateryna Tymchenko.
