About this Event

ARRI Certified User Training for Imaging Fundamentals

Join us for a 3-day in-person training where you'll dive deep into the fundamentals of imaging science! Learn from industry experts about the inner workings of digital cinema cameras, color science essentials, and scaling paths from source resolution to final delivery.

Event Photos

The training consists of theory sessions combined with opportunities to get hands-on experience through exercises, assignments, and demonstrations. Plus, discover how the concepts you learn will impact the creative process and how you, as DIT, can safeguard the cinematographer's vision. The training does not provide a blow-by-blow overview of the role of a DIT or step-by-step operating guides of software or hardware. This is because every job and every crew requires a different approach to the position of the DIT. Instead, participants should leave the training with the confidence that their new found knowledge serves as a solid basis to continue educating themselves while on the job.

Who should attend

People with a desire to understand how on-set decisions impact post-production processes. People with 2-5 years of on-set, editorial or post-production experience, for instance as:

  • Data wrangler
  • Dailies operator
  • Junior or medior DIT
  • Assistant editor
  • Junior colorist
  • Conform editor
  • 2nd AC
  • Service operator at a camera rental facility

At a minimum, a participant is knowledgeable about:

  • How a professional film, tv or advertising production operates and has seen such productions up close, either on set or in post production;
  • The basics of standards like HD, UHD, 2K, 4K, SDR, HDR, HDtv/Rec709 and framerate;

People that are comfortable with at least one of the following two tasks at a beginner to intermediate level:

  • Setting up and navigating the menu of an ARRI ALEXA family or similar digital cinema camera.
  • Basic shot balancing and creative grading in a professional Color Grading Software

Are you considering signing up, but not sure if this is the right course for you? Try browsing through this document about the ACES framework or this document about camera imaging technology. If you feel you understand what the documents are about generally, but would like to connect some missing dots while reading them, this course is for you.

What you will learn

  • Digital cinema camera inner workings & creative impact
  • The basics of ARRI REVEAL Color Science & ARRI Textures
  • Understanding linear, logarithmic, and video encoding
  • Color science essentials: colorspace, color-managed pipeline, ACES
  • Relationship between sensor sizes, lens illumination circles & resolution, scaling path from set to post-production
  • Exposing for SDR & HDR
  • How to manage a show look with show-LUTs, CDLs & LMTs

Miga graduated in 2008 at the Utrecht University of the Arts (bachelor course: AudioVisual Media). After graduating he started a free-lance practice as postproduction supervisor, which at the time was a position filled by only a handful of people in The Netherlands. After a 3 year detour at The Netherlands Film Festival, where Miga served as Head of Production and IT, he came back to the field of postproduction. This time around he served as Director of Technology and Innovation at Amsterdam based image post house Filmmore.

In 2018 Miga made a leap into the international space, joining Netflix to manage the Production Technology team for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). In this role he managed a team that supported all Netflix original productions on a technical level, helping the crews to reach the highest technical quality possible and to implement new technologies into their workflows.

As of 2022 Miga offers his services as workflow and postproduction consultant to productions and post houses across Europe and beyond and serves as teacher at The Netherlands Film Academy.
