Texas Folklife Presents: Salon Sessions at BatchA Series Celebrating Folk and Traditional Arts in Austin
Event Description:
Texas Folklife presents an evening of South Indian bharatanatyam dance and carnatic music. Bharatanatyam is an ancient dance that tells stories through facial expressions, hand gestures, and footwork. The dance is accompanied by carnatic music, an ancient vocal-based music with devotional lyrics commonly in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and other South Indian languages. With the 2nd largest Indian diaspora population in the US, these music and dance practices represent a growing part of the fabric of Texas’s folk and traditional arts.
The evening begins with an introductory presentation by Guru Dr. Sreedhara Akkihebbalu (2021 Apprenticeship Program mentor), followed by a dance performance by his students from Kaveri Natya Yoga; Anuradha Ramachandra, Divya Warrier, Shreelakshmi Nagaraj. They are accompanied by musicians Shruthi Karpur on voice, Chandana on veena (plucked strings) and Skanda Narayanan on mridangam (drum).
