Event Description
Join us to tour the monumental artworks of the Central Subway in downtown San Francisco. Ride together on the new subway line between stations while hearing from artists and curators including JD Beltran, Jim Campbell, Hughen/Starkweather, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and others.
We will view permanent, large-scale works by Tomie Arai, Jim Campbell, Werner Klotz, Yumei Hou, Hughen/Starkweather, Roxy Paine, Erwin Redl, Clare Rojas, Leslie Shows, and Catherine Wagner.
Speakers
JD Beltran is an award-winning writer artist, filmmaker, journalist, and educator. She received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and was a longtime columnist on art & culture for SFGate.com and the Huffington Post. She also is a longtime Commissioner on the San Francisco Arts Commission (since 2009), the public agency overseeing all city-owned public art commissioned for the City of San Francisco, and served as Commission President from 2011-2018. Her art works, including public artworks, have been commissioned, screened, exhibited, and collected internationally including at the Walker Art Center, the Getty Institute, and the San Francisco MOMA. She was faculty in Film, New Genres, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Critical Studies at the San Francisco Art Institute for 17 years until 2018 and currently is faculty in Design at San Francisco State University.
Hughen/Starkweather is the collaboration of Bay Area visual artists Jennifer Starkweather and Amanda Hughen. Their research-based paintings and sculptures reference engineered infrastructures interwoven with natural ecosystems in the landscape. Exhibitions include the Asian Art Museum, the Public Policy Institute of California, and the University of San Francisco. Residencies include Headlands Center for the Arts, RecologySF, Skowhegan, Ucross, and Yaddo. Recent large-scale commissions include SFMOMA for the Chase Center, and the 10 story facade of Samuel Merritt University in downtown Oakland. They are the recipient of a 2020 Individual Artist Grant from San Francisco Arts Commission. Starkweather received an MFA from Tyler School of Art; Hughen received an MFA from University of California, Berkeley.
