Presentation Title: Becoming an Embodied Therapist

Presentation Description:

“Ignoring internal states amounts to burying feelings, and the burial site exists in the body itself.” S. Kleinman & T. Hall

As we move through life, our interoceptive self can perceive and interpret bodily felt states allowing us to feel and understand what’s happening inside our own bodies. Individuals with eating disorders, however, often ignore the experience of living in their bodies, instead, focusing on emotionally driven behaviors that provide an illusion of control. Developing new expressive pathways is vital for change to occur. Attendees will learn to trust their innate ability to “attend” empathically, respond authentically and translate non-verbal experiences into cognitive insight. Collaborative interactions will include exploration of specific embodied methods that can pair with attendees’ own skill sets to guide them in facilitating meaningful embodied experiences.

Presentation Learning Objectives:

• Identify and explain the importance of integrating interoceptive awareness into the treatment of eating disorders.

• Name three concepts that focus on accessing the language of the body.

• Explain one expressive technique that will allow interoceptive processes to be accessed.
