A bit about your hosts:
Madhuri Rahman is a systems change advocate, consultant learning designer, and community organiser. Her work interweaves emerging technologies, social justice, and economic transformation, challenging audiences to connect the dots between power dynamics, systemic inequalities, and pathways to a more equitable future. Madhuri's academic background in political psychology and power structures, underpins her approach to reimagining societal systems.
Madhuri is currently the Director of Infinity Learning Ltd., a consultancy exploring how learning design and emerging tech can spark social transformation. She has extensive experience facilitating workshops, designing learning programmes and leading outreach initiatives for activist and social justice organisations. Her work with the London Doughnut Economy Coalition involves attracting young and diverse voices to bring 21st-century economics to life in London.
Madhuri's work in Bangladesh, where she led corporate training operations for the British Council, allowed her to develop and deliver culturally sensitive learning solutions across public, private, and development sectors. Her ability to navigate complex cultural landscapes and bridge communication gaps has become integral to her approach in facilitating discussions on global economic systems and social change. This international exposure enhances her capacity to engage with diverse audiences and bring varied perspectives into conversations about systemic transformation.
Sara Mahdi is a degrowth and climate researcher, political ecologist, and activist. In her work, she deploys fresh narratives and research, mixing natural and social sciences, getting audiences to join the dots between politics, economics, climate change, race, inequality, and social justice.
She currently leads communications and messaging at Rethinking Economics International. In recent years, Sara has debated economic growth at Channel 4, bridged the gap between urban researchers and policymakers at LSE Cities, led campaigns with the Earth Day Network, co-designed activities and programmes at the Doughnut Economics Action Lab, Natural History Museum, UNFCCC, and went back to school for a Masters degree in Anthropology, Environment, and Development at UCL.
Prior to moving to the UK, Sara spent a decade as a conservationist in India, working to protect endangered species and forests alongside local communities, helping draft one of South Asia’s first climate action plans and policies, fundraising for grassroots cooperatives, writing, speaking, drawing, and engaging with the public and policymakers, notably at Sanctuary Asia, among others. Sara is also researching degrowth pathways to mitigating inequality and social injustice at Autonomous University of Barcelona.
