Cemetery Art History Tour at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery
Step into Tampa’s historic Woodlawn Cemetery for an afternoon exploring the art, symbolism, stories, and traditions carved into stone.
This immersive experience brings together art history, local history, cemetery exploration, and hands-on creative discovery. We’ll begin indoors at Wave & See Creative Sanctuary before heading to Woodlawn Cemetery to explore its monuments, gravemarkers, imagery, and hidden details firsthand.

Begin at Wave & See Creative Sanctuary with a visual presentation exploring cemetery art, gravemarker traditions, symbolism, and the stories behind the imagery we’ll encounter.
GUIDED WOODLAWN CEMETERY TOUR
Explore historic Woodlawn Cemetery with Andrew Lumish, aka “The Good Cemeterian,” a monument restorationist and historian. Discover the cemetery’s history, notable monuments, resident stories, and details you might otherwise walk right past.
HANDS-ON CREATIVE EXPLORATION
After the tour, we’ll slow down and experience the cemetery through an artist’s eye. Collect your own visual impressions through sketching, charcoal rubbings, and clay + ink impressions of gravemarker motifs.
🎨 Take-Home Cemetery Field Kit Included
Your ticket includes materials for the day and continued exploration, including a field journal, charcoal + rubbing paper, clay + ink, flower petals for offerings, and a reusable tote bag.
No art experience is necessary. Come curious.

We’ll meet at Wave & See Creative Sanctuary for the opening presentation before traveling to nearby historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Additional arrival and parking details will be provided to registered attendees.

Want to Take the Experience Further?
The Cemetery Art History Tour is also the first chapter of our optional 3-Week Tombstone Art Workshop, held October 10, 17 & 24.
Workshop participants will transform the symbols, motifs, and impressions gathered during the cemetery tour into an original work of art through meditation, sketching + composition, art-transfer methods, mixed-media techniques, guided instruction, and studio time, culminating in a closing reception.
Tour + 3-Week Art Workshop: $169

Space in the workshop is limited to 16 participants.

Info: We will orient with a presentation of the history and art motifs of Woodlawn Cemetery at Wave & See Creative Sanctuary before riding out as a group to the cemetery grounds nearby (less than 1 mile away).

Info: Andrew "The Good Cemeterian" will lead us on a guided tour through Woodlawn, noting it's most beautiful monuments, and telling its most ghoulish stories.

Grave Impressions Demo & Explorations
Host: Hannah Lorra
Info: You will be taught how to collect designs from gravestones using charcoal rubbing transfers and clay stamp relief transfers. Then, you will have the opportunity to explore and collect what calls to you in the cemetery. Andrew, a historic preservationist, will also host a hands on demo of how to clean and restore monuments - right in the cemetery.
