Join us for an evening of bold, boundary-pushing improvisation in the atmospheric surrounds of the Samuel Worth Chapel.
Resonant Bodies is the duo of Rob Bentall (nyckelharpa) and Zebedee Budworth (hammered dulcimer), who first met in doom-folk ensemble Slug Milk. Together, they reimagine the medieval sound world through daring improvised dialogue – performances that veer from serene to chaotic, building to frenetic intensity while drawing on the raw, tonal harmonies of their ancient instruments. Recent highlights include supporting Shovel Dance Collective at EartH, a slot at Belfast’s Sonorities Festival, and selection for the prestigious Britten Pears Artist Residency in 2026.
Sullow, an improvising trio featuring Jacken Elswyth, Daniel S. Evans, and Joshua Barfoot (of Shovel Dance Collective), create music rooted in and mutated from traditional forms. Their improvisations have been described as “farmyard” and “rodeo”: dense bursts of sound shaped by repeated patterns, quick attacks, and moments of volatile energy.
For this special performance, Resonant Bodies and Sullow join forces as a quintet, blending their approaches into a singular, exhilarating sound. The collaboration debuted at The Horse Hospital in London in April 2025 and now comes to Sheffield for the first time.
With support from Lou Barnell – award-winning vocalist, sound and performance artist, and winner of the 2021 Oram Awards. Her work fuses voice, movement, cyborg technology, and shapeshifting materials such as ice, wax, and thermoplastic to create immersive “live dreams”: visceral soundscapes that are brutal, beautiful, and utterly unique.
