Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,With love in Christ, I warmly invite you and your families to join us at Saint Mary’s Romanian Orthodox Church, Calgary, on Sunday, September 7, 2025, for the celebration of the Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God. This great feast is one of joy and thanksgiving, as we honor the birth of the Holy Theotokos, through whom our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ entered the world for our salvation.
Following the Divine Liturgy, all are welcome to remain for fellowship and refreshments offered by our parish community. May this Holy day be an opportunity for us all to draw closer to God and to grow together as a spiritual family in faith, love, and prayer. I look forward to seeing you and your loved ones.
The Nativity of the Mother of God, celebrated on September 8, is the first great feast of the new liturgical year in the Orthodox Church. On this day, we rejoice in the miraculous birth of the Theotokos to her righteous parents, Saints Joachim and Anna, who had prayed fervently for many years to be blessed with a child. God answered their prayers, granting them not only a daughter but also the one who would become the living temple of the Lord, chosen to bear the Savior of the world.
This feast reminds us of the faith and patience of Saints Joachim and Anna, who trusted God in their struggles and were rewarded with great joy. Their daughter, the Virgin Mary, grew in purity and holiness, preparing herself from her earliest years to become the dwelling place of Christ. Her nativity is not only the fulfillment of her parents’ prayers but also the beginning of the unfolding of God’s plan for the salvation of all humanity.
For Orthodox Christians, the Nativity of the Mother of God is a feast of hope, renewal, and light. We honor her birth as the dawn of salvation, because through her, the eternal Word of God took flesh and dwelt among us. As we celebrate, we are called to imitate her humility, obedience, and devotion to God, trusting that the Lord will also work wonders in our lives when we place our hope in Him.
Yours in Christ,
Father Lucian Constantin
