Please join us on Tuesday, October 8th for the launch of In Loving Riddles: Selected Poems of Joseph Sherman. The event, which will take place at the Confederation Centre Arts Gallery at 7 pm, will include poetry readings and remembrances from Brian Bartlett and members of the PEI poetry community.
In Loving Riddles: Selected Poems of Joseph Sherman, which is edited by Brian Bartlett, celebrates the literary legacy of the late PEI Poet Joe Sherman. His poems include both fine-tuned miniatures and expansive, multi-part poems. His diction ranges from common speech to rarely encountered language.

According to Brian Bartlett, “Joseph Sherman was a writer of great verbal vigour and wide-ranging empathy. Grounded in Jewish heritage and Maritime roots, his poems are filled with family life, natural settings, and moments of history. For many years, Joe lived and worked in Charlottetown as the inspired editor of ArtsAtlantic. One poem of his says, “There are days / when we forget to mourn, / and celebrate despite ourselves.” The time is ripe for his majestic accomplishment in poetry to reach new readers.”
JOSEPH HOWARD SHERMAN was an award-winning Jewish Canadian poet, columnist, curator, and visual arts editor. He was the author of nine books of poetry including Beautiful Veins, published by Acorn Press, the editor of the Arts Atlantic magazine for 21 years and a member of the Order of Canada. Joe was born in Bridgewater, NS and lived in Charlottetown, where he is survived by his wife Ann and his children Matthew and Rebekah.

BRIAN BARTLETT has published sixteen collections and chapbooks of poems, along with three volumes of nature writing and a gathering of prose on poetry. He edited selections by Dorothy Roberts, William Bauer, Robert Gibbs, and Alden Nowlan. Brian grew up in New Brunswick, where his friendship with Joseph Sherman began over half a century ago and since 1990 he has lived in Kjipuktuk/Halifax. His most recent collection is The Astonishing Room.
