to celebrate Women's History Month with its program entitled Trailblazing Women in Science. The event focuses on the lives of two revolutionary women: Mary Treat, a 19th-century pioneering naturalist who lived in Vineland for 50 years, and Dr. Ruth Patrick, a 20th-century freshwater ecologist. The program will be held on International Women’s Day, Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
The first part of our afternoon program will be presented by Deborah Boerner Ein, who is the author of "Mary Treat: A Biography." Mary Treat contributed to the fields of ecology and botany and was a correspondent of Charles Darwin. Five species of plants and animals were named after her:
- amaryllis (Zephyranthes treatae),
- oak gall wasp (Bellonocnema treatae),
- three ant species:
(Aphaenogaster mariae)
(Aphaenogaster treatae)
(Dolichoderus mariae).
Deborah Boerner Ein grew up in the Pinelands of southern New Jersey. She attended Rutgers University, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry and Natural Resource Management. Ein is currently the editor of SNJ Today and enjoys sharing Mary Treat’s relatively unrecognized story with others.
The second part of our afternoon program, Carol Spacht, an actor from the American Historical Theatre in Philadelphia, will perform about the life of botanist and limnologist, Dr. Ruth Patrick. Patrick "broke through the gender barrier of the early 20th century to become a pioneer environmentalist in the area of freshwater ecology. Her alma mater was the University of Virginia. Dr. Patrick proved that a balanced ecosystem in a river depends upon biological diversity. Her work on water quality and pollution has made her an advisor to five presidents of the United States and a recipient of the National Medal of Science. Her love of the natural world continues to influence new generations of scientists who share her desire to make this world a better place." (American Historical Theatre)
Come celebrate the achievements and strength of women who have inspired generations past and present. Light refreshments will be served. Tours of the 1814 David C. Wood Mansion House will be conducted. The program is free and open to the public. Donations are welcomed. Parking is behind the Wood Mansion accessible from Church Street.
