Damien Crutcher is a conductor, educator, Managing Director of Detroit Harmony at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and a 2024 Kresge Artist Fellow. In 2013, he founded Crescendo Detroit to transform the lives of Detroit youth by nurturing the whole child through exceptional music, dance, and mentorship.

A Partnership That Inspires
That philosophy came to life in 2025 when acclaimed musician and Prince's longest-serving band member and music director, Morris Hayes, visited Crescendo to lead a masterclass with our students. The experience grew into an ongoing partnership that continues today. On August 25, Crescendo students will serve as the opening act for An Evening with Mr. Hayes and Friends at Detroit's historic Bonstelle Theatre.

The concert features Morris Hayes, accomplished Detroit musicians, and special appearances by members of Prince's The New Power Generation. Prince shared a special connection with Detroit throughout his career, and Morris Hayes is committed to giving back to a city that embraced Prince and his music from the very beginning. For Crescendo students, the evening is an extraordinary opportunity to rehearse with, learn from, and share the stage with internationally acclaimed artists, experiencing firsthand the level of excellence they are challenged to achieve every day.
