Where body and mystery, or spirit, intersect, is the realm of soul. Thich Nhat Hanh says, “Wash the dishes to wash the dishes” and “the miracle is to walk on Earth”. The mundane world, where suffering is only suffering and loneliness is only loneliness, pushes us to dip into soul, into the aspect of attention that Mary Oliver calls “our true work”. Noticing the flowers shining outside the razor wire walls of the concentration camp brought Victor Frankle the gift of the freedom to choose where he placed his attention – brutality or beauty. He claims it saved his life. What does soul mean to you? When has attention to goodness, kindness, simple beauty, sun or breeze on your skin lifted you from the mundane into a realm of release and rest, and even transcendence?
