About this Event
Most people love to hate Arnold Schoenberg’s music. But do they know what they are rejecting? This series will show how to find and love its great hidden beauty, through detailed listening, plain talk with careful live illustration, and repeated hearing. Each of the five events, one per September weekend, will focus on a different genre and artistic moment, featuring the best of the Bay Area’s zealous new music performers. The lecturers are enthusiastic teachers dedicated to all classical music.
The five Schoenberg selections are: the freely expressionist Opus 11 Piano Pieces, the Hanging Gardens song cycle on the brink of tradition’s edge, the late psychological String Trio, cabaret cycle Pierrot Lunaire, and two religious choral pieces: Peace on Earth + Three Thousand Years. Taking this journey will bring you to a new level of enjoyment and understanding of all modern music.
Participating groups include Earplay New Chamber Music Ensemble, The Left Coast Ensemble, and Voices of Silicon Valley. Jonathan Khuner is organizer, main lecturer, and pianist. Other lecturers include Matilda Hofman, Bruce Bennett, and Cyril Deaconoff. Featured vocalists: Nikki Einfeld and Charlotte Khuner.
