About this Event
A celebration of the life of UWE Bristol Honorary Graduate, Guy Bailey OBE.
and guests share the story of , his pivotal role in the 1963 Bristol Boycott and who, after a degree at UWE Bristol, founded the first Black housing association in the South West. An evening of poetry, celebrating activism and academia.
Guy Bailey's story is one of courage, making a difference and helping others. Refused a job interview due to racism, Guy’s actions sparked the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the fight for racial equality and social justice in Britain.
But Guy's journey didn't end there. Inspired by his degree at UWE Bristol he founded United Housing Association to support Caribbean Elders, the first Black housing association in the south-west. Guy received an honorary doctorate from UWE Bristol in July and this event celebrates that achievement and the power of life-long learning.
- Hear from current UWE Bristol tutors about involving the community in education.
- Connect with UWE alumni on the role universities play in empowering communities and students.
- Enjoy conversation, poetry and a night of celebrating activism, academia and networking.
The event is FREE and will also launch a fundraiser for Caribbean lunch clubs in Bristol and kick-start UWE Bristol’s Black History Month. Don't miss this opportunity to honour Dr Guy Bailey and cerebrate life-long learning!
