The speakers are David Sutcliffe, Brian Peters, Keith Chandler and Michael Heaney.
Cecil Sharp died on June 23rd 1924. A hundred years later, in the village of Headington Quarry where he first encountered traditional morris dancing, we will hold an event to commemorate his life and work.
Cecil Sharp was largely responsible for the world of English folk music and dance which we enjoy today. As well as being a prolific collector of traditional song and dance, he was a tireless promoter of their revival, through publications, teaching and organization. His enthusiasm and astute use of the media of the time ensured a strong public profile for the music and dance to which he was so committed, influencing composers such as Holst, Finzi and Vaughan Williams, and helping to inspire revivals in other countries, including the USA, Scotland and Ireland. Without Sharp and his work we would know little about so many facets of folk tradition, and the present-day folk revival, if it existed at all, would be very different. Because of his strong connection to morris dancing and to the Headington Quarry musician and dancer William Kimber, it seems only right that we should commemorate the hundredth anniversary of his death in Headington itself.
Numbers are limited for the afternoon event so if you wish to come please let us know so that we can reserve a place for you. A collection will be taken to cover expenses.
