About this Event
A free read-aloud event every Saturday from September 17-November 5 from 10-11 a.m. at The Bazaar on Apricot and Lime (821 Apricot Ave) with food and beverages available from Hamlet's Eatery.
Each Saturday, one of Sarasota's community leaders will read one of their favorite children's books that celebrates diversity and inclusion.
Description:
Today, state legislators are introducing - and in some cases passing - educational gag orders to censor teachers (https://pen.org/steep-rise-gag-orders-many-sloppily-drafted/), proposals to track and monitor teachers (https://www.thedailybeast.com/big-brother-is-headed-for-the-classroom), and mechanisms to facilitate book banning in school districts with a focus on books that relate to communities of color and LGBTQ+ subjects (https://www.businessinsider.com/state-legislatures-across-the-country-are-proposing-book-ban-bills-2022-2). We'll join together with the book community - librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types - in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.
Come ask questions and learn more about the latest in book banning while your kids enjoy a classic storybook and hands-on activity. Plus, free books! T-shirts from the Florida Freedom to Read Project are available for purchase.

PEN America has collated an Index of School Book Bans that documents decisions to ban books in school libraries and classrooms in the U.S. from July 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. Check it out here! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hTs_PB7KuTMBtNMESFEGuK-0abzhNxVv4tgpI5-iKe8/edit?usp=sharing
