Celebrate Fall at Nicholson: Making Chow Chow, 1000 Words Project Unveiling, Pop-Up Apothecary, and Teen Residency Exhibition.
About this Event

Join the Nicholson Project in celebrating the new Fall season with our final garden program of the year before preparing the garden for the winter months. Our farmer-in-residence, Geo Edwards, will lead us in making Chow Chow (11am-1pm) from produce in our garden, and Melani N. Douglass will host a pop-up apothecary in tandem with the unveiling of her 1000 Words portrait project in our galleries. We will also be presenting an exhibition as the culmination of our summer Teen Residency program featuring work by ten Washington, DC-based teen artists.

Making Chow Chow (11am - 1pm)

It’s the time of year in the garden where we’re focused on how to make the most from our harvests. Canning, pickling, and fermenting are just a few of the many ways to preserve and guarantee we eat our bounty throughout the winter months. Chow Chow is a pickled relish and easy-to-make Southern favorite condiment that can liven up countless other dishes. Join Geo Edwards at our next workshop, Making Chow Chow, where we will harvest what’s growing in Nicholson’s garden, demonstrate how to make the relish, and sample Chow Chow on a dish.

Pop-Up Apothecary + 1000 Words with Melani N. Douglass (11am - 3pm)

The Nicholson Project and Melani N. Douglass from the Family Arts Museum present 1,000 Words, a collaborative project which aims to create portraits of community wisdom and expertise about the art of home and garden. This project celebrates wisdom as fine art while documenting the expertise of the everyday. Melani has worked with DC Mutual Aid Apothecary to create a pop-up apothecary in our garden featuring free herbal products and fresh-cut herbs. In the galleries will be the unveiling of her 1000 Words project, featuring video interviews, photographs, and wisdom sharing with Geo Edwards, herbalist, and Nicholson's Farmer-in-Residence, Dr. Martina Washington, founder of New Life Wellness Center, and Samaria King and Malka Roth, founders of DC Mutal Aid Apothecary. Guests can take home a special recipe card created and designed for this project.

Teen Art + Social Practice Residency Culminating Exhibition (11am - 3pm)

Flourishing is the culmination of The Nicholson Project’s 2021 inaugural Teen Art + Social Practice Residency. This exhibition features works by ten Washington, DC-based teens, created at The Nicholson Project during their 8-week summer residency. Learning alongside professional artists and educators, these young artists had direct access to Nicholson's garden while exploring the art of the natural world and contemporary social practice with encouragement to build on their own unique artistic vision.
