Who are we?

Building from our foundations in the internationally renowned Education and Social Research Institute (ESRI), research in the School of Education at Manchester Metropolitan University is world-leading with impact at local, regional, national, and global levels.

Our top ten ranking for research power in REF 2021 reinforced our prominence as a centre for research in education in the North-West of England. 100% of our research impact in Education was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. We placed in the top 150 in the 2023 QS rankings.

Researchers in the School of Education utilise methods that challenge understandings of what research and education could, and should, do. Our collaborative environment values co-produced quality research. We are leading the debates on the nature and future of formal and informal education, contributing to the development of applied social research by working collaboratively with and supporting our community partners, practitioners, and professionals in researching their own practice. Our researchers work in innovative ways to support young people and to develop ways of working in schools and communities to create transformational change.

We have a range of areas of expertise including: early childhood education; critical policy studies in education; equity, diversity, and inclusion; mathematics education; pedagogical innovation; post developmental childhood studies; and community-based learning.
