Join us for the opening celebration of Repossessions, Sown Together: New Voices in Contemporary Textile Art, and Yashua Klos: Cornerstones.
Repossessions brings together work by eight Black artists who engage with historical documents and objects connected to enslavement and the Jim Crow era in the United States. Through varied artistic approaches, the artists reinterpret these materials to explore the lasting impact of slavery, the ongoing call for reparations, and the possibilities of reclamation and healing. The exhibition’s title reflects both the history of human ownership and the artists’ process of “repossessing” these objects from archives of enslavement and transforming their meaning for the present.
Sown Together: New Voices in Contemporary Textile Art brings together contemporary textile works exploring identity, memory, migration, and the African diaspora through weaving, quilting, beading, embroidery, and other fiber practices. Rooted in Indigenous and diasporic traditions, the exhibition considers textiles as both material and metaphor, connecting ancestral knowledge, family histories, cultural resilience, and new perspectives on Black identity and belonging. Through the work of artists across generations and geographies, Sown Together celebrates the evolving possibilities of textile art while honoring the traditions that continue to shape it.
Yashua Klos: Cornerstones features Yashua Klos’s large-scale woodblock-print collages that explore Black identity, community, and resilience through portraiture and architectural forms. Drawing on the built environment of his hometown of Chicago, Klos’s composite figures engage with materials such as concrete, wood, and fractured grids that evoke the histories of segregation and systemic injustice. The exhibition considers how these materials and structures can be reclaimed as foundations for strength, possibility, and new futures.
