About this Event

For our first event in the third annual CCAM Sound Art Series, we are excited to welcome Viola Yip!

Viola Yip is an experimental composer, performer, improviser, sound artist, and instrument builder from Hong Kong. Her instruments and sound performances have been presented at music festivals and venues including the Issue Project Room, The New School, Cycling '74 Expo, Sonic Arts Research Center at Queen's University Belfast (UK), QO-2 (Brussels), Currents/ Festival für aktuelle Tiefkultur (Köln), A L’arme! Festival (Berlin), Seanaps Festival (Leipzig), Festival für Immaterielle Kunst (Hamburg), and ZHdK (Zurich).

Viola has given workshops and artist talks at Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Hong Kong Baptist University, the City University of Hong Kong, and Ars Electronica Hong Kong Garden (HK). She recently received an Honorary Mention from Giga-Hertz-Preis 2021 at ZKM (Center for Arts and Media) in Karlsruhe, a Künstlerhaus Villa Waldberta Stipendium in Munich, as well as an INITIAL Special Grant from the Academy for the Arts in Berlin. violayip.com

At this event, Viola will speak with Ross Wightman about her practice, and perform her instrument Bulbble (2019) — an electronic, self-built instrument that has a variable configuration, assembles four to 12 channels of incandescent light bulbs, and produces a “pulse-timbre continuum of acoustic sounds that are generated from relays” (Yip, 2019).

A Q&A with the audience will follow.

The CCAM Sound Art Series is curated and produced by Ross Wightman.

This event is in-person and open to the public.

Please note: All audience members must have an up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination status and be asymptomatic. Proof of vaccination and an ID will be required to enter the venue. Masks must be worn at all times.
