Throughout the 1770s, the people of Sandwich, like those in communities across New England, struggled to cope with the growing tensions between the British Parliament and the American colonies. While town officials met to debate appropriate responses, families also faced unrest within their own homes. Many were deeply “caught up in conflict.” Tory or Patriot? Hero or traitor?
Drawing on family papers and town records, we can gain valuable insight into daily life during this turbulent period in our nation’s history — the “times that try men’s souls.” In this presentation, Dr. Holberton will explore how these collections were used to uncover the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of Sandwich families during the Revolutionary era, with particular focus on members of the Smith family who lived in the present-day Hoxie House.
