Downward-facing dog will soon involve a lot more cats.
EveryBODY Fitness will host its 4th Annual “Cats on Mats” Yoga event on March 2, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The event partners with Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Control Shelter (HCWACS) to raise awareness for International Rescue Cat Day, which is celebrated each year in March.
The class will be led by RYT-200 instructor Marianne Kalinoski and will last approximately two hours, with one half devoted to a cat-inspired yoga session and the remainder dedicated to interacting and playing with adoptable cats. The event is donation-based, with a recommended donation of $15–$20, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated directly to HCWACS.
This combination yoga class and adoption event gives participants the opportunity to interact with cats outside of the shelter environment. Being in a relaxed, open space allows the cats’ personalities to shine and helps potential adopters more easily envision them in their own homes. In past years, EveryBODY Fitness has raised approximately $1,000 per event through its Cats on Mats classes.
The event reflects EveryBODY Fitness’ mission of giving back to the community. Each month, the gym partners with a local program or charity. Members contribute requested items throughout the month, which are then donated to the selected organization.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), interacting with animals can decrease cortisol levels—a stress-producing hormone—and lower blood pressure. Studies also show that spending time with animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost overall mood. Cats on Mats brings together cat lovers and those curious about cats for a fun, welcoming experience focused on health, movement, and well-being. Participants will learn yoga poses that support balance, coordination, focus, and mobility—all while sharing their mats with feline classmates during this one-of-a-kind event.
