Small devices, significant impact — advancing safety, competence and success.

This interactive evidence- based programme provides nurses with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to deliver safe, urinary catheter care across a range of clinical settings. Participants will explore indications, insertion techniques, maintenance, troubleshooting and catheter-associated complication / prevention for external, indwelling and suprapubic catheters.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe lower urinary tract anatomy and physiology relevant to catheterisation.
  • Identify indications, contraindications and catheter selection criteria.
  • Differentiate between external, indwelling and suprapubic catheters.
  • Demonstrate safe insertion and management principles.
  • Recognise and manage common catheter-related complications.
  • Apply strategies to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and trauma.
  • Educate patients and caregivers to support self-management and shared decision-making.
  • Document catheter care accurately and comply with local policies and guidelines.
