About this Event
Join us for a unique evening of time-travel as we celebrate TIME/LIFE, the new book by bestselling author, award-winning journalist, and Women’s Equality Party co-founder Catherine Mayer, who will be joined by her good friend Joanna Baker, former Edinburgh International Festival Director and current Chairof the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. A feminist reimagining of H.G. Wells’s Time Machine, TIME/LIFE is a love letter to science fiction rooted in a very real present of rising populism and the unintended consequences of technology. Above all, it is a powerful meditation on the nature of love itself. Catherine and Joanna have been friends for decades so expect further time-traveling through conversation. There will be readings from the book as well as the opportunity to ask your own questions and to buy your own copy of Time/Life.
Catherine Mayer is a bestselling author and award-winning journalist, the former Europe editor of TIME magazine and the co-founder of the Women’s Equality Party and Primadonna Festival. Widowed at the start of the pandemic, she also runs the music estate of her late husband, legendary guitarist, producer and Gang of Four founder, Andy Gill. She finished and executive-produced a double album, The Problem of Leisure, that he was working on at the time of his death. Her books include Amortality: The Pleasures and Perils of Living Agelessly about the changing attitudes to age and ageing, Attack of the 50ft Women, described as ‘a compelling feminist call to arms’, and a memoir, Good Grief. Her biography Charles: The Heart of a King generated worldwide headlines with its claims of dysfunction in the royal courts and was a Sunday Times top-ten bestseller. TIME/LIFE is Catherine’s debut novel. She started writing it in 2019 in the back of a Gang of Four tour bus. The first draft eerily foreshadowed the loss to come. The final version makes something beautiful out of it.
Joanna Baker has worked across the Scottish, UK and international cultural sectors, including as Managing Director of the Edinburgh International Festival from 2006 – 2018. Subsequent roles include Executive Director of IMPACT Scotland, the charity established to build a new state of the art concert hall in the heart of Edinburgh (2020 to 2022). She is currently the Chair of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and a Trustee of the Edinburgh International Culture Summit Foundation and co-founder and Trustee of the Primadonna Festival and Prize. Joanna was awarded a CBE for Services to the Arts in 2020.
