About this Event
We are delighted to invite you to a trip to your childhood !
An afternoon of captivating storytelling at the legendary Franklin Castle...
Hosted by a lyrical reader in poetry and the ancient tales of Folk-lore, this enchanting event will start with a cycle of 19th century German tales by the Brothers Grimm, evocative of the cultural and imaginary world of North and Central Europe ; a voyage to the heart and soul of your ancestors.
The cycle will start on Sunday, March 15th with 4 tales evocative of the natural world and Spring time.
The Frog King
The Goose Girl
The Hare's Bride
The surprise tale !
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, were German scholars known for collecting and preserving the German fairy tales that have become part of our collective imagination, such as Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and Rapunzel. Their first collection, "Children's and Household Tales," was published in 1812 and has had a lasting impact on folklore and literature.
The very mention of their names conjures mystery and magic... Even more so when we learn they were raised in Steinau, a region of Northern Germany that was very close to Süderau, Johannes Tiedemanns' village of origin... Johannes must have heard those tales as a child as they they originated in and around these lands.
How fascinating for children and grown-ups alike to hear the Tales - today- through the warm voice of Adam McGilvray resonating in our beloved castle's great hall !
What to Expect:
Guests are welcomed through the front door and offered to settle in for a curated cycle of Storytelling in the Great Hall – Breaks and refreshments will be offered between each Tale. Then, questions will be raised and discussions, encouraged.
After the Tales, a workshop will be held for another hour in order for children and adults to illustrate their favourite tale. Drawing paper and materials will be ready and available. Guests are -of course- welcome to bring their own drawing tools and favourite sketchbook.
The illustrations will be featured on our website and instagram ( with permission by their authors ).
With a very limited number of guests, the afternoon remains relaxed and intimate whilst encouraging sparks of cultural discovery and the search for a moral or wisdom concealed within each tale.
