About this Event

Join us on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 6–8 PM CT for a vibrant celebration of Pensacola’s rich seafood heritage! Part of the Northwest Florida Seafood Heritage series, this free event delves into the story of mullet, one of the most signficant local fisheries feeding our Gulf Coast communities. In this two-part exploration, participants will hear from engaging speakers and have the opportunity to explore the hertitage of mullet fishing with local chefs, community organizations, and University of West Florida researchers.

Space is limited to 100 people; RSVP today to reserve your spot! This event is recommended for participants ages 12+.

6:00–7:00 PM:

  • Dr. Michelle Zacks (Yale University) - Explore the cultural and historical significance of mullet in Florida communities.
  • Gina Alvarez (Florida FWC) - Discover insights into the regulations shaping today’s fishing industry.
  • Teresa Pitts (Perdido Seafood Company) - Learn firsthand from the experiences of local fishermen about the life and legacy of mullet fishing.

7:00–8:00 PM: Savor the flavor of tradition! Sample mullet-inspired creations , explore interactive displays, and connect with community partners:

  • Sample dishes crafted by talented local chefs
  • Try your hand at net-making and net-throwing demonstrations.
  • Discover archaeological finds from the region’s maritime history.
  • Learn about Gulf Coast ecology, recreational fishing, and more!

Celebrate the past, present, and future of mullet as we honor a tradition that continues to unite and sustain our community. Whether you’re a seafood lover, history enthusiast, or just looking for a fun evening, this event is for you!

All dishes served at the event will include a detailed ingredient list to accommodate attendees with allergy concerns.

Support for this event is generously provided by the UWF College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities through their Gulf Coast Culture Series. Venue space has been donated by the UWF Historic Trust.
