Local History and Genealogy presents an enlightening exploration of the Cassette Girls—women brought to New Orleans in the 18th century to help settle the French colony. This program will dive into their true historical roles and how their lives have been romanticized in media over the centuries, including in film and popular culture.
Following the presentation, we’ll screen a film adaptation of Victor Herbert's operetta, Naughty Marietta, which offers a fictionalized portrayal of life in early New Orleans. See how Hollywood’s interpretation of history compares to the real-life experiences of the Cassette Girls.
